Different teachings/messages - what is right for me?

Sometimes we can end up scratching our heads ..
There are so many teachings on how best to live your life - be it in conjunction with spirituality, religion, psychology etc. One person might tell you to set goals and have timelines set in which to achieve them, another person might tell you to live in the present moment and let the future take care of itself.

One person might say that thoughts are not real, another person might say you should pay close attention to your thoughts.

Then, there is your own view of the world in general, which has been shaped by your experiences, perhaps a lot of them negative. It can be hard to dislodge some deeply held subconscious beliefs, and the mind often does not want to let go of thought patterns that might be unhelpful, but are supposedly justified.
'I can't ever forgive that person. No way.'
'My partner has messed me about. It's all his/her fault.'

It's also easy to be influenced by other people and teachers, and to think that you have to follow the path they show you. Personally, I think it's good to pay attention to people who are clearly walking the walk and are a shining light. Sometimes, you need to be discerning - there can be some people with good intentions and good teachings, but not everything they say might be right for you. It's important to follow your own internal compass, first and foremost, and apply the teachings that work for you.

Whatever your message to teach is, there is always going to be someone that disagrees with it. And hopefully, there will be people who agree with it too. I don't believe there is one 'right' way. I believe there are several 'right' ways - as long as your message and views aren't harmful and are spoken with love, then you have the right to teach others.

Hope this makes sense. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, as sometimes it seems so confusing as to what message one should believe.
